I'm Likhit and I am from the mighty Manawatu but spent a few years at Otago university doing some study before coming up here for med school. Right now, I just find all aspects of medicine and every specialty equally just as fascinating. To be honest I can't wait to hit the hospital wards for patient interactive learning!
Abstract
My talk will be focused on the history of Tuberculosis (TB). I will be running through the ages from ancient mummies to modern day medicine to give you a taster of the disease and to see how far we have come when dealing with TB.

My presentation explores the development of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit over the 20th century, specifically in America. Rates of neonatal survival drastically increased in this time, which can be explained through technological advancements and changing social ideology.

Biography
I’m Bernard Aucamp, a 3rd year medical student. I entered medicine as a graduate student from the USA. I have a BS in Biomedical Science and MS in Cell & Molecular Biology from St Cloud State University in Minnesota. I have always had an interest in medicine and worked within the healthcare sector throughout my studies. Moving forward, I am keeping my options open but surgery is an interest I would like to explore.

My presentation explores the first heart transplant surgery through the careers of John Gibbon, Vladimir Demikhov, Walt Lillehei and Christiaan Barnard. These men were instrumental in pioneering this branch of surgery and provide a window into this key medical development.
