Our bi-monthly meetings are a great opportunity to meet others interested in medical history.

We hope to reinstate meetings from November 2022.  Normally the Society meets on alternative months on a Thursday evening at 7pm at the Ernest & Marion Davis Library (EMDL).   Covid 19 restrictions will be strictly adhered to according to current Ministry of Health guidelines and A+ requirements. Meetings are free and bookings are not required.

Donations will be invited at the conclusion of each meeting. (Donations are not mandatory)

Click on Latest News to read about our new Special Interest talks.  These are short informal talks preceding the main lecture;  topics include the fascinating stories behind some of lesser known objects in the Ernest and Marion Library. This is great opportunity to learn more about this rich collection of medical objects, their provenance and the people who may have been associated with their story.  Talks are no longer than about 25 minutes, starting promptly at 6.15pm. Bookings are not required but for space reasons numbers are limited to  about 12 people. (First come first served.)

The Programme archive shows some of the previous presentations, along with brief biographical details of speakers and an abstract. (To access  details double click on the  title of presentation.)

NB. When meetings are resumed confirmation and further details will be circulated in the Meeting Announcement  about two weeks prior to the date of the meeting.

Speaker presentations cover a range of topics related health history including biographical life stories of medical pioneers, public health historical issues such as epidemics and preventive medicine,  historical events and significant medical discoveries and innovations.

At times, there will be special displays of relevant historical items. A selection of historical books from the Library’s collection is commonly available and can be made available for short term loan.

Once a year students present the AMHS prize winner essay and the Humanities top essays.
