Biography

John Cullen 

Born 1937 Greymouth New Zealand. Lived and went to school in Fiji 1945-1952University of Otago Medical School graduated 1961 President OUSA

Olympic Games 1960/64 (Hockey). Nuffield Dominions Trust Scholarship Oxford 1968-70 M.Sc. (Oxon). Appointed full time orthopaedic surgeon Middlemore then helped to establish orthopaedic service at Auckland Hospital. Senior Lecturer Auckland Medical School Associate Professor 1977/78

In 2000 ceased private practice and resigned from Auckland Hospital to establish a new orthopaedic service for the Waitemata District Health Board.  Ceased active surgery in 2013

Employed by WDHB to lead special projects including a hospital for elective surgery and an education centre. Retired from WDHB in 2022. Previously an orthopaedic examiner, President of the NZ Orthopaedic association, Medical advisor to Southern Cross Healthcare orthopaedic surgeon Devonport Naval base

My name is Megan Kuan and I am a 3rd year undergraduate medical student and I took the first-year biomed pathway. I have found studying the nervous system very interesting so far, but I'm currently keeping my options open regarding specialties, and looking forward to gaining experience on placement next year.

My presentation is on the history of the anti-vaccination movement from its beginnings in the 18th century, to today. I explore this by looking at the backlash faced by the small pox, MMR, and COVID-19 vaccines.

Biography 

My name is Claudia Hall, I am a third-year medical student with particular interest in anaesthesiology, fertility/obstetrics, infectious disease, and oncology. Prior to starting my medical degree, I obtained a Bachelor of Science in Otago with a double major in biochemistry and human nutrition, and an Honours in Biomedical Sciences, with my project focused on preclinical anti-cancer drugs at the ACSRC.

A History of Lobotomy

This presentation dives into the dark history of lobotomy, including a timeline of the development and popularity of lobotomies, with particular focus on Walter Freeman’s transorbital lobotomy. The cultural background and scope of mental health treatment in the twentieth century will be discussed, as well as a look into two lobotomy case studies and the eventual demise of the practice.
